SUMMARY:8th Deliberative Democracy Summer School
DESCRIPTION:The Centre for Deliberative Democracy at the University of Canberra, in collaboration with the University of Birmingham, invites you to the 8th Deliberative Democracy Summer School This year’s summer school will address the pressing challenges and future prospects of deliberative democracy in a turbulent and unequal world. The organisers welcome submissions on all topics related to deliberative democracy, participatory democracy and democratic innovations. Proposals on the following topics are particularly welcome: Theory of democracy Deliberative practice in the Global South Methodological innovations Democratic resilience and the public sphere New developments in democratic innovations AI technologies and deliberation The programme features an outstanding international line-up of speakers, including Hans Asenbaum, Emily Beausoleil, Nicole Curato, Marjan Horst Ehsassi, Marina Lindell, Daniel Kübler, Kei Nishiyama and John Dryzek. The event is supported by a brilliant teaching team, including Adele Webb, Selen Ayirtman Ercan, Simon Niemeyer, Emanuela Savini, Wendy Conway-Lamb, Jordan McSwiney, Jonathan Pickering and Jean-Paul Gagnon. Call für papers The deadline for academic paper submissions is 10 July 2026 If your application is successful, you must submit a paper of between 7,000 and 10,000 words (including the bibliography) by 30 November 2026, which you will then present during the Summer School. The paper will be published as part of the Summer School proceedings as an indexed publication. The review process is double-blind. Please ensure that your paper is completely anonymised. Papers will be assessed on the basis of their thematic suitability for the literature on deliberative/participatory democracy and democratic innovations, as well as their overall quality. Submitted papers must represent the applicants’ own academic work; the use of AI tools for minor linguistic editing is permitted, but their use to generate substantive arguments, analyses or texts is not allowed. Costs and travel There is no registration fee for the Summer School; however, participants must arrange their own travel and accommodation. Unfortunately, no financial support can be provided.
