SUMMARY:Design features for an intersectionality-informed Citizens´ Assembly
DESCRIPTION:Intersectionality (from the English intersection, meaning ‘point of intersection’ or ‘intersection’) describes the overlap and co-occurrence of different forms of discrimination against an individual in social reality. Academics who incorporate the concept of intersectionality into their work take this reality into account. This online seminar organised by EU-CIEMBLY on 29 September 2026 will feature Dr Niall O’Connor and Dr Anastasia Karatzia as guest speakers, who will give a presentation on the topic ‘Design features of an intersectional Citizens’ Assembly’. Dr Niall O´Connor is an Associate Professor of EU and Employment Law at Essex Law School. His research interests lie primarily in the relationship between fundamental human rights concepts and the legal regulation of the employment relationship, with a particular emphasis on the competing values of economic freedoms and social rights. His most recent research explores the consequences of Brexit for the ongoing relevance and influence of EU fundamental rights in the UK, including for the legal conceptualisation of the various dimensions of ‘citizenship’. Dr Anastasia Karatzia is Honorary Senior Lecturer in Law at Essex Law School and Chief Research Officer at Breez Cyprus. She is an expert on citizens’ participation in the European Union, having researched extensively the European Citizens’ Initiative. Anastasia is co-leading the University of Essex team in the EU-funded project EU-CIEMBLY, which explores intersectional inclusion, equality, and deliberation in citizens’ assemblies. As part of the EU-CIEMBLY project, Anastasia co-led the team in designing and implementing two pilot citizens’ assemblies in 2026, in Colchester and in Cyprus. Register now! ...
