SUMMARY:Controversial, yet side by side - How to succeed at collaboration in polarized times
DESCRIPTION:Democracy does not mean that we all share the same opinion. Different perspectives and interests are part of it, and dialogue is essential - especially when it comes to controversial issues. But how can we manage to keep the conversation going and work together to find solutions, even in the face of stark differences and in polarized times? On September 15, International Day of Democracy, the discussion “Controversial, but side by side - How collaboration succeeds in polarized times” will address precisely these questions. The event will begin with opening remarks by Dr. Nadja-Raphaela Baer, director of the Einstein Research Unit “Coping with Affective Polarization”, and Georg Diez, historian, journalist, and author (including “Tipping Points: From the Promises of the Nineties to the Crises of the Present”). They will examine the concept of polarization from different angles and offer perspectives on how we can address it in the context of democracy and civic participation. In the subsequent panel discussion, participants will engage in conversation with practitioners and activists who represent diverse approaches to fostering civic participation and dialogue in Berlin: Marzahn-Hellersdorf Citizens’ Jury, part of the federal model project “Climate Meets Municipality”, featuringDominik Chadid, Climate Protection Officer for the Marzahn-Hellersdorf District Office in BerlinRaiko Hannemann, Board Member of the association Democracy.
