Democracy under pressure – crisis or opportunity?
Democracies around the world are under pressure. Authoritarian and nationalist movements are gaining influence, social polarisation is increasing, and trust in political institutions is dwindling – even in established democracies.
At the same time, democracy thrives on people who take responsibility, get involved and stand up for their values. But many are asking themselves: Is our democracy too complicated, too slow, too aloof? Or does it need more commitment, more dialogue and more courage to compromise, especially now?
Based on the ideas of philosopher Jeanne Hersch, the participants will discuss how democratic freedom can be filled with life. How can trust be regained? What forms of participation strengthen our democracy – and what is each and every individual willing to contribute?
Following a keynote speech by Winfried Kretschmann, Minister-President of Baden-Württemberg, the following panelists will take part in the discussion:
- Markus Dieth, Member of the Aargau Cantonal Government, President of the Conference of Cantonal Governments
- Katja Gentinetta, political philosopher
- Winfried Kretschmann, Minister-President of Baden-Württemberg
- Daniel Kübler, Chairman of the Board of Directors, Centre for Democracy Aarau
Moderator: Roger De Weck
The event can also be followed via live stream.
