What we do

In recent years, Mehr Demokratie has launched various initiatives and campaigns in support of citizens' assemblies. Here is an overview.

Klima trifft Kommune

As part of the “Klima trifft Kommune" (Climate Meets Local Government) project, we are organising mini-publics on the topic of climate protection in four German local authorities, in collaboration with the Gesellschaft für Klima und Demokratie (Society for Climate and Democracy). Following this, all eligible voters will be able to vote on the implementation of the recommendations made by the citizens' juries. More...

Lospfade

How can citizens’ assemblies be used on a long-term basis? What political roles can they play in this context? And what framework conditions are necessary for this? Through the “Lospfade” project, we sought answers to these questions in 2025. More...

Citizens' debate on "Fair Taxation and Public Finances"

Through the public debate “Fair Taxation and Public Finances” in 2025, we demonstrated that citizen participation via random selection is possible even when dealing with complex issues such as taxation and public finances. More

Citizens' Assembly Database

In 2024, we launched an online database that records all randomised citizen participation schemes carried out in Germany from 1972 to the present day. The database is run in collaboration with the Institute for Democracy and Participation Research at the University of Wuppertal. More...

Citizens' Assembly "Nutrition in Transition"

On behalf of the German Bundestag, we supported the Parliament’s press office in 2023/24 with its public relations work for the Citizens’ Assembly on ‘Nutrition in Transition’, thereby ensuring its visibility in the media. More

Losland

Through the LOSLAND project, which ran from March 2020 to May 2023, we supported ten local authorities across Germany in implementing bespoke participatory processes aimed at creating a future fit for our grandchildren. A key component of this was the use of lottery-based citizens’ juries. More

Right at the heart of it with citizens’ assemblies

In the run-up to the 2021 federal election, we promoted the idea of federal citizens’ assemblies through numerous events featuring Members of the Bundestag and parliamentary candidates, as well as through various campaigns. More

Citizens' Assembly "Germany's Role in the World"

With the Citizens’ Assembly on ‘Germany’s Role in the World’, held in 2021 at the request of the Council of Elders of the German Bundestag, we demonstrated just how valuable it is to complement the work of Members of Parliament with an assembly of randomly selected citizens. More

Citizens' Assembly on Democracy

The Citizens’ Assembly on Democracy, held in 2019, was the first example we organised to demonstrate that citizen participation through random selection enriches democracy and to show how it works. More
