What we do
In recent years, Mehr Demokratie has launched various initiatives and campaigns in support of citizens' assemblies. Here is an overview.
Klima trifft Kommune
As part of the "Klima trifft Kommune" (Climate Meets Community) project, we are working with the Gesellschaft für Klima und Demokratie (Society for Climate and Democracy) to hold citizens' juries on the topic of climate protection in four German municipalities. Afterward, all eligible voters can vote on whether to implement the recommendations made by the mini-publics. More
Lospfade
How can citizens’ assemblies be used on a sustained basis? What political roles can they play in this context? And what framework conditions are necessary for this? Through the “Lospfade” project, we sought answers to these questions in 2025. More
Citizens' Assembly Database
In 2024, we launched an online database that records all random-selection-based citizen participation processes conducted in Germany from 1972 to the present. The database is operated in collaboration with the Institute for Democracy and Participation Research at the University of Wuppertal. More
Citizens' Assembly "Nutrition in Transition"
On behalf of the German Bundestag, we supported the Parliament’s Press Office in 2023–24 with public relations efforts for the Citizens’ Assembly on “Nutrition in Transition,” thereby ensuring its visibility in the media. More
Losland
Through the LOSLAND project, from March 2020 to May 2023, we supported ten municipalities across Germany in implementing tailored participatory processes aimed at creating a future fit for our grandchildren. A central component of the project was sortition-based citizens’ juries. More
Right in the middle with citizens' assemblies
As part of the “Right in the middle with citizens' assemblies” campaign, we promoted federal mini-publics through numerous events featuring members of the Bundestag and Bundestag candidates, as well as through several other activities leading up to the 2021 Bundestag election. More
Citizens' Assembly on "Germany's Role in the World"
With the Citizens’ Assembly on “Germany’s Role in the World,” held in 2021 at the request of the Council of Elders of the German Bundestag, we demonstrated how valuable it is to supplement the work of members of parliament with a randomly selected mini-public. More
Citizens' Assembly on Democracy
The Citizens' Assembly on Democracy, held in 2019, was the first example we organized to demonstrate that citizen participation through random selection enriches democracy and to show how it works. More
